Therapy for Moms: giving yourself a hard time

Hi folks. I just wanted to get on here because, um, I caught myself giving myself a hard time about, uh, just nothing really, uh, nothing, nothing needing, uh, a moral analysis. Um, but it got me thinking about how so often, um, I hear people describing, um. Uh, themselves, giving themselves a hard time over, uh, rather neutral occurrences.

Like, uh, the dishes have been left out for a while, uh, therefore I'm lazy, or I'm a, I'm a bad adult. Uh, or, you know, uh, clothes haven't been put away yet. Therefore, I'm a bad parent. And somehow these stories that we might tell ourselves, uh, can kind of become, uh, about our moral failing, and that's the first thing we hear from ourselves rather than, uh, some really important information about what's actually going on inside.

And often when we get curious about it, at least what I hear is, well actually I'm really tired, or I'm really overwhelmed. Um, and, uh, and I don't know what to do. Um, and I find that when we can get curious, well, you know, what is it that you're exhausted by? Or what is it that you're overwhelmed by? You know, uh, we can actually start to think about, oh yeah, like, there's a reason I'm tired, there's a reason, uh, I'm overwhelmed, you know, uh, I'm going through a work transition, or, well, my.

A child's been waking up in the middle of the night, like, I'm so sleep deprived. I, I've had interrupted sleep for weeks, kind of a thing. You know, I hear rather regularly. And, uh, and then, you know, it begs the question, okay, well what might actually alleviate the exhaustion or, uh, the overwhelm? And when we can ask ourselves that question, we might actually be able to tap into our creativity.

Um, and, you know, learning what we really need and then knowing how to address it. Um, and sometimes it's time and space for reflection. Uh, but I find that that's, you know, often what it takes for us to really figure out what we're needing, uh, and, uh, what will help.
